The museum

To complete your visit of the cave and for no additional charge you can visit the Prehistory Museum in the village

The Museum aims to reveal to the visitor the modernism and know-how of the cave’s occupants through their vestiges, which show a very high level of technical and artistic prowess.

Indeed it houses an inestimable collection of remarkable pieces.

Among the most famous of which you will be able to admire the reproduction of the renowned decorated throwing stick, called the “Faon aux oiseaux” (Fawn with birds), considered to be one of the masterpieces of Palaeolithic art. Other high points of the visit, the display of the cave’s only human remains – a Magdalenian skull – presented with its scientific reconstitution and the presentation of Azilian times through the microliths and painted pebbles so typical of Mas d'Azil.

The visit takes in three levels:

  • On the ground floor, temporary exhibitions.

  • First floor (two rooms): the first presents the magnificent collections of prehistoric objects found in the cave: weapons, tools, sculpted, engraved and decorated movable art objects of admirable quality (including the famous “Faon aux oiseaux”). The second room allows you to discover the Azilian civilisation with its renowned painted pebbles.

  • On the second floor you will be able to discover the Cave’s inaccessible decorated galleries with the reproduction of prehistoric paintings and engravings.
